Best comics of all times

Every Comicfan probably has a different opinion about the best comics, depending on the personal taste. Here are just some of my favourite comic books of all times.

Watchmen is a limited series of twelve issues, written by Alan Moore, drawn by Dave Gibbons and published in 1986. The Story takes place on an alternate earth being close to a nuclear war. Several superheroes are retired after working for the government. A murder on a known superhero forces the rest to work together again to find the murderer.

Although all of the protagonists wear some kind of costume, there is just one of them who actually possesses real superpower. The fascination of this comic book comes with the difference of each protagonists view on the world.

One sees everything in Black and White and is therefore not able to accept or to see a compromise. Another main character has stopped to see himself as human and seems to lose interest on mankind and their problems although perhaps being able to solve everything within seconds.

The whole story evolves through the support of many flashbacks and the fictional world seems to get more pessimistic on every page.

The Sandman by Neil Gaiman

The Sandman is a comic written by Neil Gaiman. 75 issues have been published between 1989 and 1996 . The Sandman belongs to the few titles ever appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List and has won several prices, including World Fantasy Award and several Eisner Awards.

The stories take place in the realm Dreaming and the waking world. Protagonist is the personification of Dreams who has to rebuilt his world. He has several names as an entity, but usually is referred to as Dream. Dream has to change, for the world has changed and this is his main task. The stories often include mythological themes and the protagonist represents the tragic hero.

Batman by Frank Miller

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, originally published by DC Comics in 1986, is written and drawn by Frank Miller. In the four issues of the series, Batman is already retired for 10 years from being a crimefighter. The return of an old enemy forces Bruce Wayne to put on his costume once again. The Gotham City described in this series, is a far darker version where crime has risen since the absence of the heroes. A street gang called the Mutants owns the streets.

But when Batman returns to capture Two-Face, so does his oldest and deadliest foe, the Joker. The Joker kills a whole television studio of people and when confronted with Batman, committs suicide with the intent that Batman is wanted for murder.

As the city descends into chaos because of a nuclear detonation, Superman is sent to take Batman down. As an outcome of the duel, Batman seems to die from a heart-attack after defeating Superman. His death is just for show and Batman goes underground and prepares to continue his fight.
